which the line-feeding movements of they paper are apt to be uneven if the platen is i operated too quickly. An object of the invention is to provide improved means for preventing the platen from being driven lat excessive speed, and,r to protect the platen and line-spacing ymech-v anism from the effects of sudden or violent operations of theusual line-space lever on the Underwood or other machines, which lever acts both to rotate the platen and to return the platen-carriage to normal position.
A further object ofthe invention is to f make the rotation of the platen easier and return movement of theslide f f less noisy.
A feature of the invention, therefore, resides in the provision of means for yieldingly driving the platen-pawl,and, in the present improvements, this is accomplished by providing a spring, connected at one end t0 the usual line-spacing slide, the spring being directly connected at its other end to the pawl which engages and drives the platen-ratchet. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of a ratchet therefor, a detent-pawl normally engaging said ratchet, a pawl for rotating said ratchet, normally out of engagement therewith, an actuating slide, means, effective on movement of said slide, for moving said pawl into engagement with said ratchet to rotate said ratchet, means brought into action on the initial movement of said slide and prior to the rotating movement of said pawl for actuating said detent-pawl to move it out of engagement with said ratchet, and means for holding said detent-pawl out of engagement with its actuating means after the initial movement of the slide.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of a ratchet therefor, a detent-pawl normally engaging said ratchet, said detent-pawl having an arm provided with a cam-face, an actuating slide, throw-out means, brought into action on the initial movement of said slide, for moving said detent-pawl out of engagement with said ratchet and for latching said detent'- pawl in said position to hold the detentpawl clear of the throw-out means after the initial movement of said slide, and means,
also brought into action by said slide, for subsequently rotating said ratchet.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of a ratchet therefor, a detent-pawl normally engaging said ratchet, a reciprocating slide, throwout means, brought into action on the initial movement of said slide in one direction, to release said detent-pawl, a latch to hold the detent-pawl released and clear of the throwout means during the subsequent movement of said slide, and means, brought into action on movement of said slide in the other direction, to release the latch.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of a ratchet therefor, a `pawl for actuating said ratchet, and operating means for said pawl, resiliently connected thereto, to move said pawl in one direction to resiliently actuate said ratchet, and positively connected 'to said pawl to return the same to normal position.
14. In a typewriting machine, the com-l bination with a rotatable platen, of a ratchet therefor, a pawl for actuating said ratchet, operating means for said pawl, a spring connecting said operating means and pawl to actuate the pawl, and thereby yieldingly actuate the ratchet, and a spring forreturning said operating means and pawl to normal position.

In a typewriting machine, the combination with a rotatable platen, of a ratchet therefor, a pawl for actuatingsaid ratchet, operating means for said pawl, a spring connecting said operatingimeans and pawl, ar lost-motion connection between said operating means and pawl, and a spring forreturning said operating means to normal position, said returning spring acting through said lost-motion connection to also return said pawl to normal position.

In a typewriting machine, a rotatable platen, a detent normally acting on the platen to yieldingly resist turning thereof, line-spacing mechanism for feeding the platen, means for rendering the detent ineffective during line-spacing operations, and means for preventing overfeeding of the platen when said detent is ineffective.
