Abstract

26,049. Galt, G. M., and Marx, R. Nov. 10. [Cognate Application, 11,428/10.] Suction apparatus.-In a stationary suctionroll or vacuum couch roll, the suction-box has no radial motion with relation to the perforated shell, and the construction and arrangement of the suction-box, or the provision of speciallyactuated packing-pieces, ensures proper airtight contact, the area of contact being made large to reduce wear. Packing-strips H having a sliding fit are mounted in grooves in the edges of the suction box, and are pressed against the shell by springs, or by water pressure from a water-pipe I. The edges of the packing-strips may be provided with india-rubber h. The suction-box A and the shell B are preferably maintained in their relative positions by roller or other suitable antifriction bearings C mounted between inner and outer hardened steel sleeves or bushes. The effective width of the suction-roll is varied by straps F mounted within the shell, and adjustable by screws G. The suction-box is held in position by screws, and may be set at any angle. The suction-box may be concentric with the shell as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be held in position by stays L, Fig. 2.
