24,312. Stibbe, G. Oct. 22. [Cognate Application, 27,022/09.] Circular machines.-Relates to machines with two concentric rotating needle beds and slidable double-ended needles operated by jacks. A selecting - device comprises a vertically sliding rotatable post 17 under the control of pattern mechanism, the upper end being suitably shaped at 18, 19 to position radially-sliding plates 12, carried in a rotating bed 11, in a suitable manner for acting upon the needle jacks 3 through supplementary jacks 4, according to the selection desired. The effect of selection is to place the butts 7 of the jacks 4 on to the point of a cam 9, which causes the butts 5 of the jacks 3 to engage the cam 10, whereupon the respective needles pass through known knitting and patterning operations, and the jacks 4 are finally placed by a cam 8 again into range of the selectors 12. To prevent the needles 36, Fig. 4, from travelling too far when released from their jacks, spring-controlled stops 44, carried by levers 40 mounted in a supplementary bed, are acted upon as shown, by the withdrawal of jacks 3, and prevent the needles operated from the opposite bed from going forwards out of reach of their jacks. The ends 53 of the jacks are disengaged from the needles by the action of cams 51 attached to the latch guards 35, and the jacks are depressed again as they withdraw by means of shoulders 52 acting on inclines 55.
