Washing-machines with enclosed rotary receptacles and means for circulating liquids.- The vertical perforated drum b is formed with re-entrant portions c for the purpose of forcing the clothes into the path of a jet of steam, water, or air entering the drum from below. The drum may be rotated by means of a turbine h secured to the hollow spindle d of the drum, and in the upper compartment of a casing f surrounding the turbine is a disk pump g, which may be clutched to the spindle when required. The pump forces the fluid through pipes m, n, the pipe n leading to a. rose p. Agitation of the liquid is increased by means of radial vertical projections attached to the outer casing a<1>. The pressure and temperature of the jet may be increased by introducing waste and live steam into the outflow from the pump, and the upper end of the drum may be steadied by a cover-plate attached by ball bearings to the lid o. The clothes may be dried by rapidly rotating the drum when emptied of liquid, and the operation may be accelerated by the use of a heating-coil or hot air.
