Cop type.-Perforated tubes carrying bobbins &c. of s p u n yarn, threads, fibres, slubbings, r o v i n g s, &c. to be bleached, dyed, or otherwise treated by the circulation through them of liquids, are held in position for treatment by spring - controlled valves which fit into and close their upper ends. Such valves are carried, either each by a separate perforated external cover c, Fig. 1, or several by the bars of a frame n of an open frame, Fig. 5. The valve has a conical end h, which fits into the top of the perforated tube a, and a stem s, which fits freely in a hole in the solid end i of the cover c, and is surrounded by a spring m, bearing against the end i and a collar k on the valve. Accordingly, when the cover a is screwed down on to its nipple e attached to a base-plate b, the spring m is compressed and makes tight joints at top and bottom of the tube a. The outer end of the stem s has a nut j, or a cotter &c. The nipple e may be screwed internally, and the cover c externally, or the cover c may be attached to the base-plate b by means of lugs and hoopshaped brackets with slightly inclined bearing faces, or otherwise. In the modification, Fig. 5, the frame n extending over the full area of the vat o, or frames extending over sections thereof, is composed of a number of longitudinal bars braced together by transverse bars p. The spring - controlled valves are arranged in alinement with holes in the baseplate b, and all is made tight simultaneously by screwing down nuts q on to studs or stays r secured to the base-plate b and projecting through the frame n, or otherwise.
