Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led November 10, 1914. Serial No. 871,383.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL Banken, .a subject of Great Britain, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bleaching-Machines, of Which thel following is a specification.
My invention has reference to an improvement in bleaching machines and more p articularly to an improvement in that form of bleaching machine in which the bleaching liquor is drawn from the tank and forced through the beam, cheeses, etc., into the tank, the .flow then reversed and the bleaching liquor drawn from. the beam, cheeses, etc., and forced into the tank.
In the usual construction of such bleaching machines as heretofore constructed, the beam, cheeses, cops, etc., are usually held 1n a vertical position and in an entirely inclosed keir or vat, also a centrifugal pump and a plurality of valves are usually used to control and reverse the flow of the bleaching liquor.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of a bleaching machine whereby'a clamping device at one end of a beam clamps the opposite end of the beam practically directly to a rotary pump.
Another object of my invention is to provide a twin open top tank bleaching machine for bleaching comparatively small amounts of stock or for sample bleaching. whereby one or both tanks may be used, a beam may be bleached in one tank and a. plurality of cheeses in the other tank or veither tank may be used for I )leaehing beams, cheeses, cops, cones. crosswound hobbins or small beams.
Further objects of my `invention are to simplify the construction and operation of a bleaching` machine whereby all valves are eliminated, beam` cheesv and cop bleaching is greatly improved and the bleaching liquor and time heretofore required materially reduced.
My invention consists in the. peculiar and novel construction of a valveless bleaching machine, said bleaching machine ha ving details of construction, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter and-claimed.

In the drawings, 8 indicates an end frame supporting two horizontal parallel screw clamps 9.9` each of which are in screwthreaded engagement with a nut member 10 Each screw clamp 9 has a hand wheel l1 on its outer end and a clamping head 12 on its inner end provided with a packing ring in its face. A reversible rotary pump 13 of any usual construction is placed at the end opposite the frame 8. A twin tank l-L closed at the bottom, sides and ends and open at the top and forming two open top bleaching compartments 15.15, is supported intermediate the end frame S and the rotary pump 13. at one end b v the frame S and at the opposite end by a V shaped pipe fitting lo. which operatively connects the pump 12% with each of the open top bleaching compartments 15.15. For bleaching yarn in the beam. the usual beam 23 having a hollow perforated center and open ends is used. as shown in Fig. 2. For bleaching yarn in the form of cheeses, cops. cones` or crosswound bobbins` my improved spindle box is used. This spindle box 2l as shown in Figs. l. 3 and l. consists of a hollow rectangular shaped closed box. approximately the. same length as thebeam '223, and having the flanged pipe openings at each end and aplurality of outwardly extending hollow perforated spindles 26.26 on each side, on which the Patented Feb. 29, wie.'
cheeses 27.27 are frictionally secured. The hollow center of these spindles 26.26, connects with the interior of the spindle box, as shown in Fig. l.
When only one bleaching compartment is required for use, the opening into the pipe in the bottom is plugged up and a dummy beam having the length of a beam and flanged ends 29.29, is usedin place of a beam and a soft rubber washer 3() placed'between the end 29, and the opening in the pipe 1S), thereby closing up both openings into the compartment, not used.
Either one or both bleaching compartments may be used at any one time, any combination of beams, cheeses. cops, cones, crosswound bobbins or small beams, (by using a short dummy beam) may be bleached at any one time. lVhen only one compartment is used only one half the quantity of bleaching liquor is required and only. one quarty of bleaching liquor is required per pound of yarn.
In the operation of my improved bleaching machine a beam 2? may be secured in one compartment 15, with one open end of the beam on the face of the head 18, over the opening in the pipe 1S), and the other end of the beam against the face of the head 12. The beam is now lirmly clamped in place against the head 18 by turning up the screw clamp ),.and a spindle box 21- carryingl a plurality of cheeses 27.27, may be secured in place in the other compartmentA in the same way. A comparatively small amount of bleaching liquor approxi.

This forward and reverse flow of the bleaching liquoll is continued until the bleaching process is completed in a comparatively short period of time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new l. A valveless bleaching machine com- This prising a frame, a reversible rotary pump, an open top tank intermediate the frame and the pump', a lower pipe connecting the pump with the tank, an upper pipe connecting the pump with the tank and means for clamping the end of a hollow perforated beam in the tank to the upper pipe whereby bleaching liquor 'maybe forced through the beam in opposite directions without the use of valves.
2. A valveless bleaching machine comprising an end frame, a reversible rotary pump at the opposite end, an open top tank intermediate the end frame and the pump, a pipe connecting the pump with the bottom of the tank, a pipe connecting the pump with the end of the tank, and means for clamping the end of a hollow perforated beam in the tank to the end of the pipe in the end of the tank whereby bleaching liquor may be forced through the beam from the center or from the outside of the beam without the use of valves.

A valveless bleaching` machine cornprising an end frame, a horizontal clamping mechanism on the end frame and having a clan'iping head in the face of which is a packing ring, a reversible rotary pump at the opposite end, an open top tank intermediate the end frame `and the pump, a pipe connecting the pump with the bottom of the tank, a pipe connecting the pump with the end of the tank, a pipe connection in the end of the tank and having a. ianged end in the face of which is a packing ring, and a pipe connecting with the pipe lead.- ing into the end of the tank whereby the flow of bleaching liquor through a hollow perforated beam in the tank may be reversed and all valves heretofore used for this purpose eliminated.
4. In a valveless bleaching machine, an
open 4top tank, a reversible rotary pump, a
pipe connecting the pump with the bottom of the tank, a pipe connecting the pump with the end of the tank and means for clamping the open end of a hollow perforated beam to the pipe in the end of the tank, whereby said tank, beam, rotary pump and pipes form a complete reitersible circulatingr system through which a bleaching liquor may be forced in either direction` without the use of'yalves.
