Corner joints and strengthening - pieces; straps, bands, &c., strengthening. - The top horizontal edges, vertical edges, and, if desired, the bottom edges also, of a cardboard or like box are provided with scored extensions or flaps b<1>, b<2>, &c. of the same material as the box, and forming when folded hollow rims or stays for stiffening and strengthening purposes. In the form shown, in which the rims are of square formation, the flap b<1> comprises three folding strips of material and a pair of tongue strips adapted to be engaged under a locking-strip c secured to the side of the box. The adjacent flaps b<2> are shown directly secured to the sides of the box by fasteners d, the locking-strips being dispensed with, and both sets of flaps are stepped at the ends so that they make a neat joint at the box corners. Instead of being square, the rims may be of triangular or D-shaped section, as shown applied to the vertical corners of the box at e.
