Abstract

22,571. Golby, F. W., [Rensch, C.]. Oct. 4. Pottery ; glazes.-Relates to the manufacture of vacuum-jacketed vessels of china, porcelain, or other ceramic ware for keeping victuals or beverages at a constant temperature. Each vessel consists of an inner wall a, an outer wall b, distancepieces z for keeping the walls apart, and a base-part c formed with ribs w on its upper surface for supporting the inner wall a. The parts are moulded separately and after being fitted together are fixed by burning. The internal and external surfaces of the vessel are then treated with glazing- material and the article is glost-fired. The air m the space v between the walls a, b is exhausted by means of an air-pump connected by a glass tube g to a nipple u on the under surface of the basepart c. The glass tube g is fixed on the nipple u (1) by means of a special glaze composed of 48 parts by weight of broken porcelain, 15 parts of calcined feldspar, 12 parts of dolomite, 16 parts of calcined silica, 3 parts of calcareous spar, 4 parts of kaolin, 2 parts of chromic oxide ; or (2) by forming the end of the tube plug or cap-shaped and grinding it into or over the nipple u, as shown in Fig. 4 ; or (3) by means of au intermediate nickel steel, or other metal piece n, Fig. 7, which is secured to the nipple by a heat-resisting cement k and to the glass by fusing or cementing. After exhaustion, the space v is hermetically sealed by melting the glass tube g, and the recess in the base c around the nipple is filled in with plaster of paris or other protective material. In the case of' large vessels, taps may be provided passing through the walls b, a and one of the distance-pieces z to the interior of the vessel.
