Lighting systems.-A lighting system employing arc and incandescent lamps in series is provided with a regulating-resistance which is protected while the arc lamps are starting, by means of resistance which is finally short circuited or cut out. The regulating - resistance consists of iron wire in an atmosphere of hydrogen. Arc lamps 3 and incandescent lamps 4 are connected in series with a regulating-resistance 7 across the mains 1, 2. When the arc lamps 3 are starting, they are placed in series with a resistance 5, which is afterwards cut out or short-circuited by a switch 6, which simultaneously connects the incandescent lamps 4 in series with the arc lamps 3 and regulating- resistance 7.
