Abstract
22,206. Protin, T., and Contal, C. March 27, [Convention date]. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; steering and balancing.-In a machine of the type having wings adjustable about vertical axes for maintaining the longitudinal equilibrium, the necessary amplitude of the adjustment is reduced by providing a tail composed of movable sectors so connected to the wings that the area of the tail is increased as the wings are moved forwards. The wings are also adapted to be warped during their adjustment. Each wing is fixed to a frame 12, movable about a vertical axis 5, and comprises a rigid front bar 10 and a flexible rear bar 11, connected by curved cross-pieces 13, and covered with paper or canvas. The tail, which is pivoted on a vertical axis 7, is formed of a central sector 16 carrying a rudder 17, and two side sectors 18 capable of extension from beneath the sector 16 against the action of springs. The wings and tail are operated from two levers 19, 20, which are so mounted on a transverse shaft 21 that, while they are free to be moved to the right or left, the shaft is turned when they are moved backwards or forwards. Displacement of the levers 19, 20 backwards serves, through rods 22, 23, to turn the frames 12 about the axes 5 and thus to move the wings forwards, the sectors 18 of the tail being simultaneously expanded by cords 24. Displacement of the lever 19 sideways serves to turn the tail as a whole about the axis 7. Ties 15 attached to the bars 11 are connected to a lever 26 on the shaft 21 so that they are operated to curve the wings when these are turned about the axes 5. The lever 26 is also connected, by a rod 25, to the lever 20, so that a supplementary curva. ture is given to the wings by displacing the lever 20 sideways. The body 1 is rectangular in front by tapets towards the rear. Propelling.-The bearings for the shafts of two front propellers 4 are carried by V-shaped frames attached to the body 1.
