Abstract
12,208. Gibson, W. W., and Hanbury, D. W. May 18. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, arrangement and construction of; steering.- The supporting-surfaces of a flying-machine are arranged fore-and-aft of the car with their greatest dimensions in the longitudinal axis of the machine, and the planes incline upwards from the centre to the sides The angle between the side portions of the forward plane is adjustable for steering vertically. Extending fore-and-aft from the central frame carrying the motor 2 are rods 7, 8, which are braced by wires 12 passing through the ends of struts 11 secured at intervals along the rods. The rods 7, 8 are connected by stays 13 to the ends of vertical and horizontal rods 3, 15. The fabric 14, Fig. 3, of the planes passes under the lower brace wires 12, and is attached at its edges to wires 18 secured to the ends of the rods 7, 8 and passing over the ends of laterally extending struts 20 connected to the middle of the rods. The struts of the rear plane are fixed at an angle to one another, and the struts of the forward plane are hinged to the rod 7 and connected by links 21 to a cross-head 22 adjusted in vertical guides 23 against the action of springs 26 by a hand-lever 25. A rudder 31 is mounted at the end of the rear plane. Propelling.-The propellers 37 are arranged fore-and-aft of the car so that the planes are acted on by the air passing to and from the propellers.
