Abstract
2353. Lucas, E. Jan. 30. Aerial machines without aerostats aeroplanes; cars; steering.-The aerial machine is supported by planes which are adjustable for steering, and is driven by a screw propeller at the rear of the machine. The body of the machine consists of a .boat shaped framework A, B, covered with canvas &c. and divided by an horizontal partition D on which the aeronaut lies. The aeroplanes H are formed with a front rib I tapering in thickness towards the end and bent rearwardly at the middle. The rear ends of the ribs are connected by a distance-piece, mounted on a curved spring and pivoted at J to the frame B. A flexible wire L connects the ends of the rib I and supports a number of ribs K on which the canvas &c. forming the aeroplane is secured. The planes are connected together in pairs, and are tilted about the longitudinal axis of the machine by cords secured to the tips. The forward ends of the planes are connected by springs M, Fig. 2, to the body at or near the centre of gravity of the machine, and the upward movement of the front of the planes is limited by frames N. The propeller is mounted on a shaft E and has large radial blades, the pitch of which can be adjusted by screwed rods G connecting the blades. The tips of the blades are connecced by a hoop surrounding the propeller.
