Abstract

Folding machines; paper-carriages; letter-spacing mechanism; ink-ribbon mechanism; alarms.-Relates to machines wherein the platen frame with the ribbon, escapement. alarm, and other devices can be folded over the keyboard so as to render the machine compact for transport or temporarily to prevent the work from being read. The carriage-bed 38 is secured to arms 144, which are pivoted at 145 to arms 143 formed on slides 141, which are mounted in fixed brackets 142 and are connected to carriageshift mechanism. The carriage is propelled by a spring-drum 49 having a tape 59<a> which is passed round a pulley and secured to the carriage. The ink-ribbon mechanism is mounted at the front of the platen, the spring-drum 49 being mounted on one of the spool-shafts 52. When the frame is folded over the keyboard, the escapement and ribbon devices are separated from the bar 86, which forms part of the universal bar mechanism. The left-hand spool-shaft 52 carries an alarm-bell which is operated by a depending arm on the carriage.
