Abstract
21,465. Rekar, J. J., and Preble, E. P. Sept. 20. Aerial machines with aerostats; adapted to travel also on land or water; aerostats ; propelling.-An aerostat of the rigid type is provided with air conduits at the upper end of which are placed screw propellers, the conduits comprising a vertical cylindrical upper portion connected to outwardlydiverging discharge passages. The aerostat A, Fig. 1, is substantially cylindrical in shape with vertical wedge-shaped end sections 3. At the fore and aft of the aerostat are the vertical conduits 7 containing the propellers 8, the lower end of the conduits being connected to the discharge passages 8<a>, Fig. 3. Arched aeroplanes 5 extend along the length of the aerostat above the outlets 8<b>, and aeroplanes 6 are disposed below the aeroplanes 5. The aerostat frame is formed of a number of annular trussed frames 2, Fig. 4, connected by longitudinal trusses 2<d>, Fig. 5. The gas envelope A forms a bend over the frames and may be secured in position by cords 2<c> fitted to the envelope and tied over the outer frame rods. The machine is propelled by propellers 10, 10<a> fixed to the ends of longitudinal shafts 11. The machine is provided with road wheels 12, and the under part of the car body is shaped to form a boat or float, so that the apparatus can be started on water. Steering.-The machine is steered by a rudder 4, Fig. 6, and by a slotted horizontal plane 4<a>, which is hinged to the vertical rudder 4 and can be moved independently thereof. The plane 4<a> can be locked to the rudder 4 by a spring bolt 4b.
