Aerial machines with aerostats; aerostats; cars.-The main buoyant portion of the machine, which is connected by cables to an auxiliary buoyant element above it, is raised and lowered by winding and unwinding the cables by mechanical means. The main portion comprises two cylindrical aerostats 1 with tapered forward ends disposed side by side and supporting the car between them. The pressure in the aerostat 1 is equalized by connecting-pipes 33. The auxiliary balloon 34 is provided with cables 35 extending fore and aft and wound upon a drum 36, which is adapted to be operated from the propelling-motor 12. Propelling and steering.-The shafts of the two oppositely-rotated forward propellers 3, 4, are universally jointed at 14, and are raised and lowered for vertical steering, links 16 connecting the forward ends of the shafts to cranks 17 on a transverse shaft 18, which is operated from a hand-lever 22 through wheels 19, 21, and a cord 20. The rear elevator and rudder comprise planes 23, 24 fixed at right-angles and connected to the machine by a universal joint. Vertical steering is effected through cords 26 passing over a wheel 27 operated by a hand-lever 28, and horizontal steering through cords 29 wound upon a drum 31 operated by a hand-wheel 32.
