Abstract

15,652. Young, F. A. March 17, [Convention date]. Tabulating-mechanism of the " column-jumper " kind. The column-stops are formed with numbertags 16 and are. also formed with forks 13, 14, which fit over a rack 12 and are looked in adjusted position by a hinged bar 18 engaging shoulders 19. The stops are formed with stop parts 11 of uniform size, and are also formed with tappets 17 which are of graduated lengths. The tappets 17 may engage a finger 24 pivoted on a slide 31, which is formed at the bottom with a series of steps 33 adapted to be engaged by arms 34 on levers 35. Keys numbered from one to ten are mounted at the back of the keyboard and each key is connected to one of the levers 35. The finger 24 engages the arm 26 of a lever pivoted to the frame at 28 and provided with an arm 27 entering a slot in a stop 21, guided vertically by parts 22, 23 of the frame and adapted to engage the stop parts 11. When a column key is depressed, the arm 34 engages the appropriate step and raises the slide 31 sufficiently to bring the finger 24 into the path of the tappet 17 on the selected column-stop. When the carriage is released, it runs until the finger 24 is engaged and swung up by the tappet 17, whereupon the lever 26, 27 is swung and lifts the stop 21 into the path of the stop part 11 on the selected column-stop and arrests the carriage. Carriage-releasing arrangements; carriage brakes. -The carriage - releasing device consists of a universal-bar 39 which is engageable by all the arms 34 and is mounted to slide on studs 40. Ths bar 39 is formed with an ear 42 which engages an arm 43 on a rock-shaft 44 connected by links 45, 47 to an arm 49 carrying a roll 51, which engages the feed-rack 8. The shaft 44 carries the usual brake-drum 57 containing a rotary brake operated by a pinion 58, which is swung into gear with a pinion 59.
