Machines for braille type; letterspacing mechinism. - In braille machines of the kind comprising a carriage provided with key-operated punches, and a space-key operating a pairs of pawls which co-operate alternately with a stationary rack to move the carriage for letter-spacing, the pawls are mounted directly on the space-key lever. The space-key 1 is secured to a pair of levers 1<a> pivoted to the carriage 2 and connected by crosspins on which rest the punch-key levers 3, pawls 4, 5 having pins 7, 7' co-operating with a stationary rack 8 being pivoted to a pin 6 on one of the levers 1<a>. The pawls are connected by a spring 9 and have finger-pieces 10. On depression of the space-key lever by means of the space-key or punch-keys, the pin 7 abuts on a tooth and the carriage is fed through one half-space, the pin 7<1> meanwhile riding over a tooth; similarly on release of the space-key lever, the pin 7' feeds the carriage through another halt-space and the pin 7 rides over a tooth. When the space-key lever is fully depressed the pawls 4, 5 are in alignment, and a pin on the space-key lever engages a stationary notched bar and holds the carriage stationary during the action of the punches. To prevent movement of the carriage during withdrawal of the punches from the paper, the pin 7<1> has lost-motion engagement with the teeth of the rack, and the pawl 5 may have a slot 5<a> engaging the pin 6.
