Abstract

Gun cartridges.- Relates to propellent charges for ordnance of the kind in which the charge is made up of one or more hollow cylinders, each comprising a number of sectors or wedge-shaped elements. According to the invention : (1) the elements a are shaped approximately as shown ; (2) their thickness varies from 0À025 to 0À035 inches for every foot of the projectile travel in the gun ; (3) a cylinder comprises from thirty-two to ninety-six elements depending upon the composition of the propellent material, the length of the gun, the maximum pressure permissible, and the diameter of the chamber ; and (4) the diameter of the hollow central space b varies from about one-fourth to about one-half of the exterior diameter.
