Coke ovens; coking processes.-Coal or other fuel is reduced to a densified or compressed coked condition by being treated in the retort 1 while being compressed by a plunger 20 secured to a screw rod 21 operated by a wheel 22, the gases evolved escaping through pipes 9, 10. The plunger is advanced against the fuel as the reduction in volume takes place due to the escape of distillation products, without unduly compressing the fuel. When the flow of volatile matter has ceased and the fuel is soft, a final compression is exerted which leaves on cooling a mass similar to the "natural coke," anthracite coal.
