Abstract

12,222. Quarles, T. M., and Chamberlain, D. B. May 24. Syringes.-Relates to an hypodermic syringe, the needle of which is forced into the flesh by releasing a spring, which has been compressed by sliding the barrel in a surrounding handle. The needle 11 is screwed on to a cap 9, and this into the barrel 2, in which is a piston 3 having a graduated piston-rod 6. The top of the barrel is closed by a cap 5 having fingerholds 8. A sleeve 20 surrounds the barrel and encloses a spring 21 engaging a flange 23 on the sleeve and a lip 22 on the barrel. Passing through a slit 26 in the sleeve is a catch 24, carried by a leaf spring 25. When the syringe has been charged and the barrel slid upwards to compress the spring 21, the catch 24 engages in the groove 27 between the end of the barrel and the top of the cap 9, and retains the barrel and needle in this position. On releasing the catch by pressing the leaf spring 25, the needle is forced into the flesh, whereupon the piston is pressed home.
