Abstract

1364591 Pipetting apparatus HELLER LABORATORIES 25 Aug 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 39823/72 Heading B1X [Also in Division F1] A pipetting apparatus comprises body 9 which may have lateral extensions 11 to serve as finger grips, sleeve means 37 mounted for axial sliding movement within the body, plunger 19 and volume rod 21 mounted together for axial sliding movement with the volume rod protruding past seal 29 between the apparatus body 9 and the volume rod into volume chamber 27, plunger 19 having shoulder 33 for engagement with inwardly extending shoulder 41 on the sleeve at completion of the normal dispensing stroke of the pipette, first spring means 31 for biasing the plunger in the position shown and second axially overlapping spring means 39 biasing the sleeve 37 as shown. After completion of the normal dispensing stroke when shoulder 33 on the plunger engages shoulder 41 on the sleeve, extra pressure on button 23 forces the plunger sleeve and volume rod further to eject the liquid remaining in the assembly. The apparatus includes plpette tip 51 having two tapers and also graduations in the form of abrupt transitions in the external diameter or gauge marks in the external surface of the tip. In use, the amount of liquid pipetted is determined by the diameter and length of stroke of volume rod 21. For different maximum capacity, the pipetting unit fits into the tip to different extents, and a series of pipetting units colour-coded on a band 30 and on pressbutton 23 may be used with a given size tip.
