Compasses, magnetic; prismatic and marching compasses.-Means for illuminating the dial of a pocket compass consists of a hood, cover, or cap, adapted for attachment to the compass and containing an electric lamp, the light from which is projected upon the dial without being visible to anyone but the user. Figs. 1 and 3 show the application to a prismatic compass. An opaque hood or cap g, with a sighting-slot h, is arranged to slide between guide-plates f so as to enclose the prism-box b and make a light-tight joint with the prism plate c. A small electric lamp i in a cell k illuminates, through an aperture l, that part of the dial under the prism. The form shown in Fig. 4 comprises a cover or cap g<1>, adapted to fit over an ordinary compass and having in a cell k<1> an electric lamp i<1>, the opening l<1> allowing light to fall only on the dial, which can be viewed through an aperture n filled with mica &c.
