Abstract

11,947. Munro, E. M., and Railless Electric Traction Co. May 20. Supporting-arrangements for collectors; trolly heads.-The trolly heads of vehicles deriving their energy from two or more overhead conductors are mounted so as to rotate in an approximately horizontal plane upon a base ur bridge-piece supported so as to be kept substantially parallel to the road surface. Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of the head and the supporting- arrangement, and Figs. 5 and 6 a sectional view and plan respectively of the head portion. The frame K carrying the collecting-wheels is adapted to rotate on ball bearings in the casing H carried by the bridge-member C, which forms one side of a parallelogram, the arms B, B' and the base forming the other sides. By this arrangement, the head is kept substantially parallel to the road surface. The arms B, B<1> work under the influence of the springs S, and are free to rotate on a vertical pivot in the support A, which may be of the form described in Specification 764/09. The wheel harps L are mounted on springs L<3> to maintain good contact with the conductors, excessive movement being prevented by pins L<4> working in slots. The slots are made sufficiently wide to permit the wheels to turn to a limited extent so as to be able to follow curves in the conductors. When a pair of wheels are used for each conductor, they are connected together by a spring N, which keeps them normally in alinement and facilitates their passage round curves. The frame K is made in two parts which are insulated from each other at K<2>, one part being connected to one side of the motor system by the cable O<1>, and the other part to the opposite side through cables R, 0 and the partial ball- and-socket coupling P<2>. To obviate risk of entanglement with the overhead gear, the frame K is turned down at its edges, and rollers K<5> and ribs K<4> are provided. If there are three conductors, the third contacting - element is mounted at the centre of the frame K.
