Abstract

11,327. Catt, J. May 13. Sextants.-An instrument which can be used as a single or double sextant comprises a casing having, at the end opposite to the sighting- device p, three apertures having sighting lines or slots o<2>, o<4>, Fig. 6, the images of the objects observed being brought into coincidence with the sighting-marks in the outer apertures by adjusting the mirrors h, the arms c, d carrying these mirrors crossing one another and reading on scales on each side of the centre. The arm c is cranked and passes under the lid of the box, but has its reading-end c<2> projecting as shown. The horizon mirrors can be adjusted so that the instrument can be used in the ordinary coincidence method; a compass with a reading-prism q<1> is fitted; and a handle in the shape of a hinged trigger-guard is provided to facilitate handling.
