Abstract

11,000. Walker, J. C. May 4, Prismatic compasses.-An instrument for use in surveying comprises a box A in which a compass D of the floating-dial type is mounted upon a pin E. A lens L, on which is marked a central line M, is attached to the lid B, and is placed in the principal focal plane of an object lens J mounted on the box, the distance being measured horizontally to a mirror U and vertically to the lens L. In taking a bearing, the image of the object cast by the lens J is made to coincide with the line M, and the reading of the compass is taken. The true north bearing is obtained by setting an indicator H to correspond to the local variation. Horizontal and vertical scales P, S and a movable pointer Q working across the scale P are provided close to the lens L, so that the angle between any two points can be obtained by observing the points on the scales with which their images coincide.
