Compasses. - In order that the marking- elements of compasses or dividers may be held parallel to each other as the compasses are closed or opened, the points K, Figs. 1 and 2, are supported in members J, pivoted to the legs A, B and pivotally connected to members G, H, which are placed inside the legs A, B and are mounted at their upper ends on disks E, F, shown in Fig. 3 in cross-section upon the line a-b of Fig. 1, placed eccentrically with respect to the binding-screw I, which serves as pivot for the legs A, B. The outer members A, B are V-shaped in cross-section and provided with ears C, D. The inner members G, H are pressed inwardly by pins R, secured in the outer members A, B, and engaging in slots 0 of the members G, H. The bearing-holes in the members A, B, G, H for the pivots are shaped so as to insure the pins wearing to a bearing under the tension. Between the disks E, F is a disk A<1>, the neck A<2> of which is surrounded by a finger-grip A<3>. The disk A<1> has a longitudinal slot, as shown in the section. Fig. 4, to receive the binding-screw I of an horizontal slot, which receives pins F<1>, F<2> projecting from the disks E, F. The point of each member K is eccentric to the axis, and a lug t is provided for turning the member to adjust the position of its point. In a modification, the compass legs are made hollow, except at the lower ends, and receive the second members, which are pivoted to the members supporting the marking-elements, and are bent to produce tension between the pivots and bearings. An extension member may be placed in one of the sockets for receiving the marking- elements.
