Application filed OctoberB, ieiefseriai n mezaue.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTHONY VASSELLI, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement inSound- Reproducing Apparatuspof which the following is a specification. f I
My invention relates to'sound-boxes or reproducers for talking machines, and more particularly to that type of 7 machine in which the record groove is carried on the flat surface of a discor'tablet.
The objects of the invention are to produce a sound-box which will be Cheap to construct, will not get out of order, in which the stylus arm may be steadily placed in proper position relatively to the diaphragm, in which the tension of the stylus arm may be easily adjusted, and which will be easy to assemble.
The object of my invention is to provide improvements in apparatus for reproducing sound; by means of which thequality of the reproduction will be improved.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of the character described,
which is extremely simple in construction,
neat and attractive in appearance, thoroughly reliable and efficient 1n its purpose, and lnexpenslve to manufacture.
'With these and other objects in view to be more fully set forth hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination of elements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the constructionhereinafter described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings considered together or separately.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which for-the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawings. V
The invention will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and then more appended claims.
. the latter will specifically defined In'the drawings, e Fig. 1 is a front elevation embodying my invention; V
Fig. 2 'isfa bottom plan view of the same; Fig. 3 is a section onan enlarged "scale-. the section being taken on the line 3 3 of 1 and j V Fig. 4 is a detail view of the knife'edge. In carrying out my invention, I provide of a sound-box and; indicated I in the a sound-box comprising a casing'l, within which is supported in the usual manner a" diaphragm 2. Secured to the center of the diaphragm .at one side thereof'isa stylus bar 3 having a cylindrical lower portion 1, within the lower extremity of which is a socket 5 for the reception of a stylus 6 which I is retained in position by means of, a screw 7.
The portion t carries a pair of trunnions 8 and 9 projecting from diametrically opposite sides thereof. The end of the trunnion 8 is provided with a vertical groove 10 having inclined walls, and engaging the groove 10 is a vertical knife edge 11 carried by a stem 12.- The stem12 is screwed into an ear 13 projecting from the lower part of the casing 1. A look nut 14: holds the stem in position; I 7
The'endof thetrunnion 9 is provided with a conical socket 15 whichis engaged by the conical pivot point 16 of a stud 17 which is carried in anear 18 projecting from the casing 1, and in axial alignment with the ear 13. The stud has a shoulder 19between which and a tubular nut 20 threaded into the ear 18, is disposed a cushioning spring 21.
The knife edge 11- being always vertical, and the groove 10 being similarly relatively to the stylus arm, the latter will be always.
parallel to the plane of the diaphragm, and
position. a
The friction of the stylusarm in itsbearings, i. e., the knife edge 11 and the cone bearing 16, may be adjusted spring 21, and nut 20. r
With a sound-box constructed as hereinbefore described, employing a knife. edge,
normallybe in theneutral by means of the bearing and a pivot point hearing, it is easy to assemblethe device.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have describedethe principle of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereoflbut I desire it understood that my invention is not confined to the particular form of apparatus herein shown and described, the same being merely illustrative, and that the invention can he carried out in other ways without 'departing; from the spirit of my invention,
' and, therefore, I claim broadly the right to ,;I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows: 7
1. In a. sound box, a casing. a diaphragm,
' a stylus arm secured to the diaphragm, op-
positely disposed trunnions carried hyrthe stylus arm, a pivotal support for one or" said trunnions and a support tor the other trunnion adapted to permit of slidable move f ment of said trunnion in a direction parallel with the stylus arm.
2. In a sound box, a casing, a diaphragm, a stylus arm secured to the diaphragm, oppositely disposed trunnions carried bythe stylus arm, a conical bearing-supporting one of said trunnions and a guideway supporting the other trunnion, said guideway adapted to permit of slidahle movement of its trunnion in a direction parallel with the I stylus arm.
3. In a sound boma casing, a diaphragm,
a stylusarm secured to the diaphragm, op
positely disposed trunnions carried by the stylus arm, trunnionbearings carried by thev casing, said bearings comprising a spring pressedconical pivot as aisupport for one trunnion, and a. knife edge parallel'to the stylus arm as the supportfor the other trunnion.
This'speeification signed this 15th day of September, 1919.
ANTHONY vAssELLi,
