8334. Keymer, H. J. C. April 6. Loose tools and bits, retaining. - Relates to means for securing the tool in pneumatic hammers. A sleeve B is secured to the cylinder A by means of projections b, which engage slots a<Î>, or the sleeve may be secured by bolts. An impact plate C with a slot h has projections c‹ sliding in slots b<0> in the sleeve B; a spring is inserted between the plate C and a flange f on the sleeve. The tool or tool socket E has wings e<1>, which are passed through the slot h in the plate C. The tool is then rotated, the bevelled edges e<2> of the wings e' engaging with the plate C and depressing it against the spring until the wings e' engage recesses c<1> in the plate C, and are thereby locked in position by the spring. Stops S engage with the wings e' to transmit any rotary motion to the tool. To release the tool, the sleeve B is held stationary and the tool is rotated until the wings register with the slot h.
