[Addition to 5780/09.] Type-casting machines; matrices; moulds.-The mould is arranged to enclose the matrix on all four sides and so prevent the formation of burrs. The matrix 7 is provided with a projection 46, the front face of which bears the character, and is of the same size as the body of the type to be cast. Oblique surfaces 48, 49 on the upper and lower parts of the mould close tightly against similar surfaces on the projection 46 when the matrix is moved up to the mould. The sides of the matrix are clamped between a movable wall and the ejector 54, 55. The upper mould member comprises two parts 50, 51. The part 50 is vertically adjustable on the part 51 for varying the body width of the mould, by means of set-screws 52, and is tightly secured by screws 53. The part 54 of the ejector is interchangeably secured to the part 55. The length of the mould is adjustable for various heights of type. Interchangeable back parts 56, 57 are screwed to the front parts 50, 2, by means of the part 58 containing the metal inlet. The two parts 56, 57 are slightly nearer together than the parts 50, 2 so that the type may have no burr at this point. Metal pots.-The metal pot a is adjustable vertically and laterally so that the opening of the casting may be in the centre of the type to be cast. The cylindrical bottom of the pot casing is provided with a screw-thread c on which is a nut d, provided with type divisions and adjustable with relation to a pointer f. The upper portion of the pot is made square and slides within vertical guides. The lateral adjustment is obtained by a screw g on which is a pointer k co-operable with a scale l. A bearing h allows vertical movement of the screw.
