Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK HowARTH BROWN and JOHN EDWARD HANRAHAN, of Baltimore, Maryland, and GEORGE ALBERT BOYDEN, of Mount Washington, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Matrices; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in type matrices from which type faces are cast.
The invention has for its duction of a matrix of this character which is particularly designed for use in a type casting machine adapted to be operated in printing offices, or by others than those skilled in the art of type making, said maobject the prochine being fully illustrated and described in our pending application for patent filed January 22nd 1903, Serial No. 140,152.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a face view of a matrix, the same being ada ted to cast the letter M. Fig. 2 is a sinn ar view of a matrix adapted to cast the same character, but smaller in size. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the philosophy which is involved in the use of our improved matrix.
In the use of a machine of the character above referred to it is essential that in changing the molds to cast different sizes of type, the parts must be constructed in such manner that a predetermined location of the relative parts is assured without the necessity of measurement or calculation, and this to an exactness within one ten-thousandth of an inch, in order to insure a product that will be accurate in all its dimensions, so as to be properly assembled in composing. WVith this object in view the matrix 10 is provided with gaging surfaces 11 and 12, located substantially at right angles to each other, and at predetermined distances at and b from i11- tersecting lines 13 and 14, respectively,

being that the gaging surfaces 11 and 12 are gaging surfaces 11 and 12 are, respectively;
forced by means of a conical pointed screw 18 working in a counter cone cavity 19, arranged in the back of the matrix, or in the matrix holding plate. By this arrangement when the screw is moved toward the matrix, the latter is moved obliquely toward the lugs 16 and 17, and securely held in this position. Said lugs are so located in relation to the other mold parts that the gaging lines 20 and 21 are always brought into the same relative relation to the mold parts, the character 15 being located in the corner or intersection of the lines 20 and 21. The effect of this arrangement is to likewise place the character always in thesame relative positionto the mold parts, irrespective of the size or shape of said character. This is clearly illustrated in the drawing, the large M being in the same relative position to the mold parts as the small N located within one member of the larger M.
In a machine of the character referred to, the intersection of the lines 20 and 21 is a fixed point in relation to the mold parts and matrix, which always remains unchanged; consequently by this arrangement, and the employment of the gaging surfaces on the matrix, together with the predetermined location of the character, the latter is always accurately placed in the proper position to be cast relatively correct with the body of the The importance of this arrangement will be more fully appreciated when it is borne in mind that possibly one thousand sets of matrices are to be used, each set containing from 80 to 120 characters, more or less, interchangeable one with the other in relation to the mold mechanism. These are all to be properly placed and correctly located on dif ferent sizes of type bodies without measurement, adjustments or the employment of skilled or technical labor heretofore found necessary in type making.
We are aware that characters have been located in certain positions on matrices heretofore, but we believe that we are the first to' provide a matrix with gaging surfaces and locate lines of the character at predetermined distances from said surfaces, said gaging surfaces being adapted to engage with counter surfaces on the mold part, by which the matrix is properly located without measuring, manipulating or adjusting.
We claim as our invention:--'
1. The herein described improvement in means for casting type comprising a plurality of matrix plates each having a character thereon, each matrix being of the same size and provided with gaging surfaces which coact to accurately position the matrix in a type mold, the gaging surfaces of each matrix plate being located in the same definite position with respect to the character on said plate irrespective of the setwise or bodywise size of said character.
2. The herein described improvement in means for casting type comprising a plurality of matrix plates each having a character thereon, each matrix being of the same size and provided with intersecting gaging surfaces which coact to accurately position the matrix plate in a type mold, the gaging surfaces of each matrix plate being located in the same definite position with respect to the character on said plate irrespective of the setwise or bodywise size of said character.
3. The herein described improvement in means for casting type comprising a plurality of matrix plates each having a character thereon, each matrix plate being of the same size and provided with a vertical and a horizontal gaging surface which gaging surfaces coact to accurately position the matrix plate in a type mold, the gaging surfaces of each matrix being located in the same definite position with respect to the character on said plate irrespective of the setwise 0r bodywise size of said character.
4. The herein described improvement in means for casting type comprising a plurality of matrix plates each having a character thereon, eac'h matrix plate being of the same size, one vertical edge and one horizontal edge of each matrix plate forming gaging surfaces which coact to accurately position the matrix plate in a type mold, the said edges of each matrix plate being located in the same definite position with respect to the character on said plate irrespective of the setwise or bodywise size of said character.
5. A matrix comprising a plate of suitable dimensions to receive a character of any bodywise or setwise size, and a character on said plate located at a predetermined point irrespective of the bodywise or setwise size thereof, said plate being provided with gaging surfaces which are located in the same definite relation to said predetermined point irrespective of the bodywise size or setwise size of said character.
6. A matrix comprising a plate of suitable dimensions to receive a character of any bodywise or setwise size, and a character located at a predetermined point on said plate irrespective of the setwise or bodywise size thereof, said plate being provided with intersecting gaging surfaces which are located in the same definite relation to said predetermined point irrespective of the bodywise or setwise size of the character.
7. A matrix comprising a plate of suitable dimensions to receive a character of any bodywlse or setwlse size, and a character located at a predetermined point on said plate irrespectlve of the setwise or bodywise sizethereof, said plate being provided with vertical and a horizontal gaging surface, said gaging surfaces being located in the same definite relation to said predetermined point irrespective of the bodywise or setwise size of the character.
8. A matrix comprising a plate of suitable dimensions to receive a character of any bodywise or setwise size, and a character located at a predetermined point on said plate irrespective of the setwise or bodywise size thereof, one vertical edge and one horizontal edge of said plate forming gaging surfaces, said gaging surfaces being located in the same definite relation to said predetermined point irrespective of the setwise or bodywise size of the character.
