Be it known that we, FRANK IIOW'ARTH BROWN and JonN EDWARD HANRAIIAN, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, and
GEORGE ALBERT BoYimN, of Mount Washington, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Type; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the sauce.
This invention relates to certain new and r useful improvements in machines for making ty e.
The invention has for its object the production of a machine in which a plurality of type characters in the form of a logotype may be readily cast.
A further object is toprovide means whereby the individual type characters of which said logotype is composed may be separately cast in the same molds as the foregoing.
In carrying out our invention we make use of the principle set forth in our application for patent filed on the 22d of January, 1903, Serial No. 140,152. In said application means are shown and described by which the set-wise size of the type is obtained by regulating the return movement of a movable mold part or ejector. In the present invention the ejector is regulated in its move ment to uncover at will a portion of the face 3 5 or the entire face of the matrix constructed to form a plurality of type characters. The matrix may be constructed for the casting of a word or logotype, or it may be used for such type characters as leaders or the like.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim s.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of a type-casting machine 4 5 with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view illustrating the mold parts. Fig. 3 is an end view of the movable mold part. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4 4-, Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of 0 matrices for casting different styles of type.
Referring to the drawings, 21 indicates the head of a type-casting machine, the same serving as a support for the stationary mold part 172. This latter is of such dimensions as to be capable of employment in casting all sizes of type both set-wise and body-wise. The movable mold part 170 is provided with a suitable holder in which the matrix 180 is removably secured in any preferred manner. A plurality of interchangeable movable mold parts are employed, (but one being shown,) said movable mold parts being each formed of predetermined dimensions to conform to the various body-wise sizes of type to be cast, there being one of said movable mold parts for each body-wise size of type. A plurality of interchangeable ejectors 119 are also employed, (but one being shown.) Each ejector is of different thickness to conform to the body-wise variations in sizes of type, there being one ejector for each body-wise size of type. Each ejector coacts with its corresponding movable mold part to establish the body-wise size of the type. The ejector is reciprocated by means of an arm 112, attached to a rock-shaft, and the movable mold part is reciprocated by the stem 1.1 of a reciprocating ram. (Not shown.) The setwise size is secured by means of a plurality of liners 124 of predetermined thicknesses, interposed between the block 120 and 122, said former-block serving as a stop to limit the movement of the ejector 119.
The matrix 180 is provided with a plurality of characters either in the form of a leader or the like, as illustrated in Fig. 5, or in the form of a word or logotype, as illustrated in Fig. 6. In practice the matrix is secured in position in its holder and the movable mold )art is inserted into operative position. If it is desired to make a cast of the entire face of the matrix, the rearward movement of the ejector 119 is not interrupted until the forward end thereof uncovers all the characters of the matrix. Should it be desired to cast a type formed with only a portion of the charactors with which the matrix is provided, a sul'licient number of the liners 124 are inserted between the block 120 and 122 to bring the ejector to a stop at a point where its forward end will only uncover that portion of the matrix from which the desired cast is to be made. For instance, assuming that the matrix illustrated in Fig. 5 is employed, a leader having six dots may he made by uncovering the entire face of the matrix in the casting, operation or leaders containing any number from. two dots up to six may Le cast by uncovering only a portion of the ma trix, according to the cast desired. It will also he noted that the ejector can be regulated so as to cover all save one of said dots, whereby periods can be cast. \V here the matrix is in the form of a logotype, illustrated in Fig. 6, the entire word may be cast on a single type, or by regulating the throw of the ejector type may be cast forming either a single letter or a combil'lation of two or more of the letters employed in making up the Word comprising the logotype.
The advantages of our invention will he at once apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains. It will be particularly observed that we have provided improved and inexpensive means whereby individual type characters and logotypes may he cast in the same mold and with the same matrix. It will also be noted that the insert liners may he made of predetermined dimensions to conform to the desired size of the type, whereby the changes can he readily made by unskilled persons and accurate casts readily secured.
While the drawings discloses a specific form of tyJe-castmg machine, yet it is to be understoo that our invention is not limited to the structure illustrated or to any other spccilic form of mechanism, nor is said in vcntion limited to the special form of mold mechanism herein. shown, the same being for illustrative purposes only.
to claim as our invention 1. in a device for casting type of one or more characters, the combination of means for supplying molten metal, adjustable mold mechanism, and a single matrix adapted to coact therewith, by which the same parts can produce one or more characters, as desired.
2. In a device for casting type, the combination of adjustable mold arts, and a single matrix provided with a pl iu'ality of characters, whereby a varying number of characctrs :an be produced by the same parts.
