I HILIPTELL DODGE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 MERGEN'IHALER LINOTYPE COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
MEANS R THE PRODUCTION OF PBINTING-SLUGS.
esa- 7.
Patented J an. 2t 1914. Divided and this app ication filed September 30, 1912. Serial No. 723,050.
. citizen of the United States. 1 :siding at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for the Production of Printing-Slugs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing,'being a division of original application filed July 15, 1907, Serial No. 383,831.
For various special purposes, such as the printing of addresses on newspapers, it is desirable to have white characters appear on a black background.
The object of my invention is to secure the production of forms for this purpose in composing machines, such for example as the Mergenthaler linotype. To this end I provide dies having a mercantile form similar to those of the linotype, but having instead of the intaglio characters, cameo char acters so formed and arranged as to enter the face of the mold and form intagliopharacters therein. These dies may beused in a linotype machine of ordinary onstruction, and composed in lines, the justified lines presented to the mold, and thereafter distributed in the same manner that the ordinary matrices are distributed in such machines, as illustrated for example in Letters Patent of the United States No. 436,532. A series of slugs formed on my plan and assembled side by side, as they will be in the machine, will present a solid flat printing surface with intaglio characters therein. The
ters therein. f Referring to the drawings: Figure l is a perspective view showing a series of slugs producedin accordance w1th my invention. Fig. 52- is a perspective view of one of the dies used in the machine for producing these slugs. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the mold with one of the dies of the line presented thereto, showing the manner in which the character on the die enters the face of the mold so as to be covered and surrounded by the type metal. I
The dies B consist each of a flat metallic plate' having on one edge in relief a character or die 5. The dies B are preferably made of the same marginal form as the ordinary matrices used in linotype machines. and are provided with distributing teeth 7/ in the upper end, and otherwise adapted to be used in the Linotypemachine in preciselv the same manner that the ordinarv matrices are used. The mold C, with which the dies cooperate, is provided with a slot or mold proper c-of the exact dimensions of the required slugs. This mold may be used and arranged in the machine in the same manner that the ordinary mold is used, to receive molten type metal to form slugs therein. The dies have their characters (3 made'of such size and so located as to project into the front of the mold slot. The line of dies B, assembled side by side and presented tightly against the face of the mold, completely closes the same and prevents the escape of molten metal. T he metal, on entering the mold, will flow over and around the characters Z) and against the face of the matrices, and the resultant slugs A have the appearance shown in Fig. 1, with fiat upper edges and the series of characters therein. These slugs are made of uniform height. preferably typchigh. and of any required length or measure. They are adapted to fit tightly together side by side, and each slug contains in its upper or printing edge the intaglio characters a in the order and arrangement in which they are to appear in print. The slugs are so formed that when assembled side by side, their upper edges will present a continuous unbroken surface adapted to print on the surface of the form. upon being inked ,and paper a black background without lin r pressed upon the paper, will produce there on a solid black background with white let breaks between the lines of characters.
Vlnlein the accompanying drawmgs and foregomgdescription-I have set forth my invention in the form I prefer to adopt, it :will be understood that the same may be modified or changed within the skill of the mechanic without departing from the limits o,f-.the invention; and it will be further understood that the invention is not limited to any particular form or construction of the parts except in so far as "such limitations are specified in the claimsf g.
It will be observcdthat the printing slug with the intaglio characters therein is;
formed in the mold directly by the injection of the molten metal against and aroundthe cameo characters on the dies and against passes the-plane surfaces imm diately surrounding the characters, these planessurfaces being specially and designedly formed so that they will give to the cast slug, corresponding and uniform plane surfaces of a character suitable to take the ink and transfer it to the paper, and in this way produce a black back-around. In order, by the operations described to produce printing slugs which may be employed for printing directly therefrom a black background around white characters, the intaglio characters therein must read from right to left, and the dies assembled before the mold must consequently read from left to right, otherwise the printing bar cast directly from the dies would print characters on the paper reading the wrong .way; -Moreover, by reason of the fact that the plane surface of each matrix is uniform and smooth,'it presents an impressionproducing surface which not only encomthe intaglio character but one which is coextensive (or practically so) with the dimensions of the mold slot which it closes. As a result, the printing surface of the slug produced by a series of matrices thus formed will be coextensive with the dimensions of the mold slot, or practically so. By the expressien. encompassing in describing the extent of the-impression-producing surface is not necessarily meant a surface which entirely surrounds the intaglio character, for in certain cases the character may extend up to one or more of the edges of the impression-producing surface, without departing from the limits of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a mechanism for producing printlug slugs adapted to produce a black back are .L
IliulOn of aslotted-mold and a series of dies adapted'to close themold and each provided with a cameo character extending into the mold and arranged'to read fromjleft. to right and havingan impression producing surface encompassing said cameocharacter and substantially coextensive with the dimensions of the die-closing portions of the mold slot; whereby printing elements formed.
by the injection of metal into the mold will have flat printing surfaces which encompass intaglio characters reading from right to left.
2. In combination with a slotted mold, dies provided with cameo characters and with encompassing plane impressionproducing surfaces, said dies adapted tobe as:
sembled in a line and presented to the mold,
with the characters projecting into the mold slot and reading from left to right and with the plane surfaces closing the front of the mold slot to effect animpression-produeing surface practically coextensii'e with-the dimensions of the mold slot; whereby by the' supply of molten metal to. themold, a printing slug willbe produced therein directly from the dies, which'slug will have int-aglio characters reading from right to left and encompassed by printing surfaces to pro;
duce a black background around white characters. y In testimony whereof-I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PHILIP TELL DODGE.-
