MOLD FOB. TYPE-CASTING- MACHINES.
Application filed. May 6, 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY WALTER DRUITT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in London, England, and whose post-office address is The Stringertype Manufacturing Company (1909) Limited, of 44 and 46 Leadenhall street, in the city of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Type-Casting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates primarily to type molds of type setting and casting machines such as described in U. S. patent specifications Nos. 675827, 675829 and 690720, wherein a line of matrices is composed and justified and individual character types and spaces are cast therefrom and then assembled in a galley. The invention is, however, also applicable to foundry machines for casting single type, with or without modifications in such machines according to their construction, whereby the mold hereinafter describedmay be directly applied for use in connection with such machines.
The primary object of this invention is so to improve the construction of molds for type casting machines as to obviate distortion of the frame or angle plate of the mold (and consequent variation in the set of the type cast) to which it is liable when the cross slide of the mold is urged against the side blocks of the mold by a spring compressed between the cross slide and the angle plate.
According to the present invention the front face of the cross slide is drawn against the front faces of the side blocks 'by means of a bolt the head of which engages a setting up block which bears against the-rear face of the cross slide. The bolt head may be spring-urged against the cross slide by means of a spring compressed between a fixed abutment and a nut on the end of the bolt, but such spring may be dispensed with, in which case the nut is screwed directly against the fixed abutment. The bolt passes through alined holes in the setting up block and one of the mold blocks and a slot in the cross slide, and in the preferred construction the bolt is given a certain lateral freedom both in the cross slide and the mold block and means are provided for setting up the bolt laterally and thereby, through the setting up block, urging the cross slide Specification of Letters Patent. laterally with greater or less force toward the frame or angle plate.
Another improvement included in the present invention consists in fitting the mold with a stop whereby the travel of the cross slide is given that definite amount necessary for the extrusion of the type from the mold. This stop projects from the frame or angle plate of the mold into a longitudinal slot of appropriate lengthin the crossslide.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which I Figure 1 is an elevation of one construction of the improved mold with part of the cross slide broken away; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same but with the cross slide shown in section and wherein the customary cone plate and jet piece, which form no part of the present invention, are not indicated; Fig. 3 is an end view of the mold with its frame or angle plate and part of the cross slide broken away and a stop member removed; Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to Fig. 2 showing a slightly modified construction; Fig. 5 is an elevation 'of a mold embodying a further modification; and Fig. 6 is a plan view of the same but showing the crossslide and certain parts in section; Figs. 7 and 8 are perspective views of the front part of the cross slide shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 8-; Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the back part thereof; Fig. 10is'a perspective view of the cross slide of Figs. 5 and 6; Figs. 11 and 12 are sectional views'of Figs. 1 and 5, respectively in'the plane of the paper; and Figs; 13 and 14 are sectional views of Figsr2 and 4, respectively, at right angles to the plane of the paper through the center of thejmoldcavity;
In these drawings like symbols are used to refer to like parts wherever they occur.
The mold shown in'the drawings is of a known construction such as that described and shown in U. S. Patent No. 691.619, of January 21. 1902, to H. J. S. Gilbert- Stringer and, as clearly seen in Figs. 13 and 14, comprises side or mold blocks 6, a frame or angle plate h, a jet or inset piece 0 adapted to form the sprue or jet of the type, and a cone plate 79 forming the orifice or entrance to the mold.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cross slide, which in this case is made in two parts to facilitate construction, viz: the
frame it. This block is drawn up against the rear face of the cross slide by means of a spring 6 encircling the projecting end of the bolt and compressed between the rear face 6 of one of the mold blocks 6 and a nut on the end of the bolt. The bolt 0 passes through alined holes in the setting up block (2 and one of the mold blocks 7) and a slot 71f (Figs. 7 and 8) in the cross slide, and there is a certain lateral freedom provided for the bolt 0 both in the cross slide and in the mold block so as to provide latitude for setting up the cross slide laterally, as by means of a set-screw f in conjunction with a spring a the tension of which is preferably adjustable as shown.
Let into the angle plate or frame of the mold is a stop 2' with bifurcations i, i
which project into a longitudinal slot a of appropriate length in the part a? of the cross slide and cooperate with shoulders at "a on the same part a* of the cross slide,
whereby the travel of the latter is given that definite amount necessary for the eX- trusion of the type from the mold.
The mold cavity m is formed between the two side blocks or mold blocks 6, b, the cross slide a and the body plate Z.
In the modified construction shown in Fig. 4 the bolt 0 is centralized at its rear end in the mold block b by means of a loose collar 0 encircling the bolt'c and fitting in a recess in the rear face of one of the mold blocks 6. The collar c forms the fixed abutment for the spring 6 which is furnished with a follower plate 6 which is preferably correlated with the collar 0 as shown in the drawing by a knife-edge connection. Lateral adjustment of the cross slide is effected by urging the inner side of the bolt head 0 toward the side of a slot d in the setting up block cl by means of the spring 9 which is accommodated in a recess in the mold block b and is secured therein by means of a plate 7' which is attached to the mold block by a set screw j, whereby also the tension of the spring 9 may be regulated.
As in the construction of Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the cross slide is made in two parts, but whereas in the aforesaid construction only the front part a of the cross slide has a bearing upon the frame or angle plate h, in the construction of Fig. 4; the rear part 00* I of the'cross slide also bears laterally against the face of the angle plate 7a and thereby obviates any tendency to jam the cross slide which might arise through any twisting moment due to the fact that the point of application of the lateral thrust of the bolt head 0 is beyond the bearing face of the front portion of the cross slide.
I11 the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the cross slide (1 is in a single piece and the setting up block or plate (8, instead of being let into a groove in the cross slide, is of angular construction and embraces one of the two corners of the cross slide. As shown in the drawings, this construction differs from that of Fig. i also by the fact that the spring a is dispensed with and the bolt head 0 is drawn into abutment with the setting up block d by screwing the nut 0 directly upon the follower plate 6 which bears against the fixed abutment collar 0. The lateral adjustment of the cross slide is shown as effected by means of a set-screw as in the construction of Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
In addition to the bolt head a, the cross slide a may be urged against the front faces of the mold blocks 6 on the side away from that upon which the bolt head operates by means of a bar or gib 7a which is arranged to be set up against a bearing strip a (Fig. 10) on the cross slide by set-screws 7c and clamped in the position to which it is adjusted by these set-screws by means of one or more clamping screws 72 Having thus described the nature of my said invention and the best means I know of for carrying the same into practical effect, I claim 1. In a type casting machine, a mold comprising side blocks, a cross slide in position upon the front faces of the side blocks, a setting up block abutting upon the cross slide, a bolt extending through the setting up block, the cross slide and one of the side blocks, and means for drawing the front face of the cross slide through the medium of the'bolt and setting up block against the side blocks.
2. In a type casting machine, a mold comprising a frame or angle plate, side blocks, a cross slide in position upon the front faces of the side blocks, a setting up block abutting upon the cross slide, a bolt extending through the setting up block, the cross slide and one of the side blocks, said bolt having a certain lateral freedom both in the cross slide and in the side block, and means for setting up the bolt laterally and thereby urging the cross slide through the medium of the setting up block against the frame or angle plate of the mold.
3. In a type casting machine, a mold comprising a frame or angle plate, side blocks, a cross slide in position upon the front faces of the side blocks, a setting up block abutting upon the cross slide, a bolt engaging the setting up block and adapted to draw the front face of the cross slide against the side blocks, a bar or gib adjustably carried by the angle plate, and means for setting up the same against the cross slide.
4;. In a type casting machine, a mold comprising side blocks, a cross slide in position upon the front faces of the side blocks, a setting up block abutting upon the cross slide, a bolt engaging the setting up block and adapted to draw the front face of the cross slide against the side blocks of the mold, shoulders on the cross slide, and a stop cooperating with the said shoulders to limit the travel of the cross slide, substan- 15 PERCY WALTER DRUITT.
