Abstract
5780. Degener, H., and General Composing Co. May 27, 1908, [Convention date]. Type-casting machines ; matrices ; moulds.- Relates to type-casting machines in which the matrix is equal in width to the type to be cast and is clamped between the mould parts in such a manner that burring is prevented on those sides of the type that are ultimately in contact when a complete line is set up. The matrices generally used in line setting and casting machines may be employed. Means for preventing wear of the matrices and for delivering and finishing the cast type are provided. The lateral walls of the mould slot are formed by a vertical slide 3 and an ejector 4, which are wide enough to seize the sides of the matrix 7 when it is brought against the mould. The extra width of the ejector 4 is provided by a transverse projection 5 which serves to clean the mould of shavings &c. during its ejecting movement, this movement being accomplished by a spring 9 and the return movement by a cam on a shaft 13. The upper and lower mould parts 1, 2 may, if desired, be adjustable for various body widths of type at the same time. The matrix holder 8 is mounted in its carrier 14 in such a manner that a spring 46 tends always to move it towards the right, Fig. 4, so that, in its movement up to the mould, the matrix clears the slide 3 and avoids being damaged. The ejector 5 moves up to clamp the matrix and, the casting operation having taken place, the matrix is removed, the slide 3 descends until its top face is level with the part 2, a slide 19, Fig. 6, moves forward under the action of a spring 18, and the type is then carried forward between the ejector and the slide 19. The slide 19 moves back a second slide 22 so that between this slide and the frame 17 is formed a vertical conduit through which the type is forced by a slide 23. The width of the conduit is always equal to the width of the type, owing to the movement of the ejector being limited by an adjustable stop 28. In a modification, the slide 19 is omitted and the type is pushed horizontally along a channel formed by a member 25, Fig. 9, which is moved upwards by the slide 3 when a cast is to take place. Slight play is provided between the frame 17 and the slide 3 to allow for expansion, and a spring is interposed in order to press the slide towards the mould. Cooling-water circulates through the frame but not through the mould, and the mould is removably mounted in the frame 37, being embedded therein on three sides. The matrix holder 8 is removably held in its carrier 14 by a bolt 38, Fig. 4. Trimming type galley mechanism.-The type pushed down by the slide 23 is moved along by another slide 24 between two jaws 41, 42 provided with knives 30 The lower jaw 42 is forced upwards by springs 33 but may be fixed at any distance from the jaw 41 by means of screws 34. A galley to receive the type is removably inserted into a dovetailed recess in the jaw 42. By the removal of a pin 43, the slide 24 becomes free and may be removed from the machine.
