Abstract

Feeding and registering webs.-A spreading and guiding roller for fabric-feeding machmes and the like comprises a number of separate cylindrical sheaves mounted closely together on a shaft, and adapted to rotate loosely on bosses set at an angle to the shaft, means being provided for fixing some or all of the sheaves. The outer sheaves at the roller ends may be placed at a greater inclination to the axis than the inner sheaves, and are also narrower, as shown in Fig. 5, where a key piece g<1> is provided to allow for the increased slope of the end sheaves d<1>. Fig. 3 shows a plan view of a spreading-roller in which the narrow cylindrical sbeaves d, d' are mounted closely together without intermediate spaces on slanting bushes e on a shaft c. The sheaves d' may be fixed on the bosses e by means of set-screws k<1>, so that, according to the width of fabric treated, the unnecessary sheaves may be rendered inoperative. Similar screws on the sheaves d close the lubricating-holes. In a modified form, each sheave d, d<1>, Fig. 4, is provided with spreading grooves on its periphery. In another arrangement, the relative positions of a spreading roller B<1>, Fig. 6, mounted on arms m and a fixed spreading-roller B are adjusted by means of two toothed pinions o on a common shaft n. In another arrangement, a spreading-roller B<2>, Fig. 7, is adjusted vertically with respect to two fixed spreading-rollers B by means of a worm r and a worm-wheel q at each end of the roller. A spreading-roller of the kind above described may be used between two guiding-rollers, which oscillate dependently of one another as described in Specification 25,585/06, [Class 42, Fabrics, Dressing &c.]' or may be mounted in a pivoted frame in the manner described in Specification 7943/09 to act as a guiding-roller. The sheaves of the spreading- roller may be made of aluminium or bronze, and the peripheral surface may be rough or smooth.
