Actuating valves.-An automatic by-pass valve for use with incandescent burners is so constructed that, on turning on the gas, the passage to the burner is opened and the passage to the pilot jet is closed or nearly closed. The valve E normally closes the aperture D leading to the burner but fits loosely over a guide F, G, so that gas normally passes through passages in the guide and through a port I to the by-pass J. When the gas pressure is raised, the valve E is lifted against its seat on the guide G, opening the aperture D and closing or nearly closing the bypass. In a modification, the upper part of the valve E may be in the form of a plunger working loosely in a hole in the guide G, the port I being then placed at the bottom of the hole.
