3908. Rourke, D. F. Feb. 17. Aerial machines with and without aerostats.-An aerial machine comprises a combination of an aerostat a provided with a lifting-propeller c, driving- propellers j, and transversely and longitudinally arranged slats k, l for steering. The aerostat may be replaced by wings or planes. Planes, arrangement of.-The lower surface of the aerostat is formed to act as an aeroplane. Aerostats; parachutes.-The aerostat a is shaped like a bird or flat-fish, and has a vertical conduit b for receiving the lifting-propeller. The shafts i of the driving-propellers also pass through channels provided in the envelope of the aerostat. This envelope may be of silk or metal, but preferably has its upper surface rigid or semi-rigid so as to act as a parachute in case of deflation. The lifting-propeller is preferably of parabolic shape and adapted to have a parachute action. Propelling.-Vertical propulsion is obtained by means of the propeller c, arranged in a conduit b and preferably of parabolic shape. The two propellers j are driven by bevel-gearing e, g and arranged so that the driving-power is applied at or near the centre of the machine. Steering vertically. This is effected by series of transverse and longitudinal slats k, operated by a lever n. Balancing.-The propeller c and the bevel-wheel g on the vertical shaft have a gyroscopic effect, so as to maintain the equilibrium of the machine.
