Abstract

2683. Marino, P. Feb. 4. Electrodes for lead accumulators are pasted with an agglomerate composed, for example, of pure glycerine, potassium, or other alkali silicate solution, and soluble starch, mixed with lead powder to make it conductive and then incorporated with finely divided litharge, three times as much litharge as lead powder being added. When the paste is dry, the electrodes are immersed in a bath composed of equal volumes of sulphuric and phosphoric acids of specific gravities 1À025 and 1À12 respectively, and the silica thus precipitated is removed along with the starch and soluble alkali salts by washing in water, leaving the active material in a porous state. The active material is converted into porous lead by arranging the electrodes as cathodes in a dilute sulphuric acid bath containing dummy anodes of pure lead. The electrodes may be used with the wooden separators described in Specification 2641/09.
