Abstract

Secondary batteries.-Positive plates are rendered porous so as to have a large capacity by a process of the kind consisting in incorporating with the oxide paste a soluble substance, such as sodium sulphate, which, after pasting, is removed by a solvent such as sulphuric acid. After the paste has been pressed in and dried, the plate is treated with sulphuric acid, containing some potassium dichromate, to dissolve the sodium sulphate and harden the plate. The paste may consist of red lead and litharge. In an example, the plate, after being pasted, is dusted over with carbon or other suitable substance, strongly compressed, washed, dried, placed in sulphuric acid containing potassium dichromate, dried again, and then placed in sulphuric acid, after which it may be formed.
