Abstract

1344. Kemp, A. J., Randall, F. W., and Primrose, F. A. Jan. 19. Steering submarine vessels.-In a submarine vessel fitted with steering-mechanism, the fore and aft pairs of lateral rudders b, Figs. 1 and 3, adapted to be operated in unison about horizontal axes c, and the vertical stern rudder l are provided with one or more protecting-fins v, w adjacent to each rudder, each fin tapering off towards the end remote from the rudder and projecting laterally beyond the same. Holes z are provided in the rudders to minimize resistance to the vertical movements of the vessel. The shafts c are operated through worm-and-wheel gearing d, e, the stern and driving rudders being controlled from the conning-tower.
