934. Fine Cotton Spinners' and Doublers' Association, [Loftus, J.]. Jan. 14. Mules.-The counter-faller shaft is supported upon knife-edges. The shaft A, Fig. 3, is of angular or semicircular cross-section with a recess a. A V-shaped piece a<2> of hardened steel is adjustably secured to the shaft by screws a<3> to act as the bearing-surface for the knifeedges B mounted in the bearing brackets. The apex of the piece a<2> is made to coincide with the longitudinal axis of the shaft. In applying the invention to existing mules, a recess a, Fig. 1, may be milled or cut out of the faller shaft A, and a knife-edge B fitted in each of the bearing-brackets c in place of the bottom brass. The knife-edge a<4> may be formed on a sleeve A<1>, Fig. 4, secured to the shaft, and engage a suitable angular or curved surface on the bearing D. The shaft may be of triangular shape and rest with one of its angles on the bearing-surfaces.
