Abstract

Steering - gear. - In gyroscopic steering - apparatus for ships, a pointing device under the control of the gyro compass is adapted to be set at will to the desired course so that the helms man has thereafter only to keep the pointer at a stationary zero position. A pointer C, Fig. 1, to to be kept on the mark b of a scale B by the action of the helmsman, the pointer being controlled by a gyro-compass. When the course is changed, the pointer is reset to the central position. At the bottom of the instrument is placed the course dial D which is operated by the gyrocompass and indicates the actual course against the lubber line a<4>. The dial D is attached to a hollow shaft G, Fig. 3, which is driven through a pinion g from a repeater motor, the current for which is led by a cable j to a switchboard J. The card D can be set by hand to agree with the master gyro. The pointer C is carried by a spindle F, a pinion f<2> thereon being actuated by a quadrant o<2> on one leg of a bell-crank lever 0; on the end of the other leg of the lever is a roller which contacts with and is moved by a cam M driven off the shaft G, the pointer therefore has a magnified movement of that of the dial D. The cam faces are formed so that the pointer is not further actuated after the ship is more than say 10‹ off its course. For setting the pointer to correspond to a change of course as desired, the cam M which is frictionally driven off the shaft G is moved by bevel gearing m<1>, n' by a hand actuated shaft n.
