Abstract

28,069. Dorman, W. H., and Dorman & Co., W. H. Dec. 24. Platen presses; feeding sheets.-Relates to gripper feeding and delivering mechanism for platen presses having a stationary platen and pivoted type bed. The chase c is carried on a bed b mounted on a fixed pivot d and rocked to make an impression against a stationary platen a<1> on the frame a by connecting-rods e and crank-pins f on the spurwheels g. The sheets are fed over a stationary board i to stops i<1> periodically depressed, and into grippers j which slide on guide-bars j<6> mounted or pivots j<7>. During the impression, the bars j<6> remain parallel to the platen a', but during the motion of the grippers these bars are rocked to allow the grippers to clear the platen by a cam j<14>, a lever j<11>, and a link j<10>. The gripper-carriage j<5> is reciprocated along the bars j<6> by links j<4> connected to levers j<3> oscillated by cams j<1> on the shaft j<2>. The feeding-grippers, Fig. 3, comprise an upper bar j<15> with spring gripper - fingers j<16> and a lever bar j<17> with fingers j<18>, these bars being journaled respectively on trunnions j<19>, j<20> in levers j<21> mounted on pivots j<22> in the carriages j<5>. As the grippers reach the upper end of their travel, rollers l<1> on the trunnions j<20> run on to cam-surfaces l to tilt the grippers about their pivots j<22> to enable them to take the sheet at the correct angle. The trunnion ends j<19>, j<20> are geared together, and the grippers are closed to seize the sheet by a lever m, which is depressed into engagement with a stud m<6> on the upper jaw by a link m<3> and a cam-operated lever m<5>. The grippers are opened at the bottom to release the sheet by a stop q on a cam-operated slide q<2>, adapted to engage a stud q<1> on the upper jaw. The grippers are retained either in the open or closed position by a spring latch n engaging with an extension n' attached to the upper jaw j<15>. After being printed and released by the feeding-grippers, the sheet is taken by the delivery grippers k carried by arms r<4> mounted on pivots r<3> and oscillated by a rod r' from a crank-pin r. These grippers comprise two jaws r<9>, r<10> carried respectively by shafts r<5>, r<6> connected by gearing. The jaws are normally kept in engagement by a spring r<11>, but are opened in the inner position to take a sheet by a camsurface r<16> on the slide q<2>, and in the outer position, to release the sheet, by a fixed surface r<12> adapted to engage a roller on a lever r<14> on the shaft r<6>.
