Abstract

24,729. Griffen, H. C., and Ware, C. S. Nov. 17. Motor road vehicles.-Relates to variable-speed gearing of the class comprising a pair of friction clutches operated by a sliding double - wedge member. The driving-shaft a is formed with longitudinal recesses h for the reception of sliding double-ended wedges g. Friction blocks i, i<1> reside also in the recesses h and are adapted to be thrust outwards into driving-engagement with transmission members c', g<1> when the wedges g are thrust to the left or right respectively. The blocks i, i<1> are kept from moving longitudinally by lateral projections resting in recesses h<1> adjoining the recesses h. The wedges q are connected to a ring k upon which is mounted the boss t of an operating-lever j. Cam teeth l upon the boss t coact with similar teeth upon a fixed bearing-ring j<1>. A pivotal movement of the lever j effects the sliding movement of the wedges g required to operate the clutches. The invention is shown applied in a two-speed gear, suitable for motorcycles, of the type described in Specification No. 12,425. A.D. 1907. The shaft a is a hollow extension fitted to the engine shaft a<3>. The gear is arranged to effect a direct drive through the blocks i to the belt pulley c, and an indirect slowspeed drive through the blocks i<1>, a countershaft r, chain &c. gearing, and a ratchet clutch v. The pulley c may be of the expanding type with a screwing flange d locked in required positions by a spring bolt d<1>.
