23,316. Garsed, J. L. Nov. 2. Aeroplanes; steering; balancing &c.-To permit of the adjustment of the effective area and the position of the surfaces (mployed for supporting, steering, propelling, or balancing aerial machines, they comprise a main plane, with or without an aperture, and a secondary plane mounted to slide relatively to the main plane. The main plane 2 is mounted on a frame 1 upon which the secondary plane 4 is adapted to slide, so that by operating cords 5 the plane 4 can be moved to either side of the plane 2 thereby adjusting the position and the area of the effective surface. The relative sizes of the planes may, however, be such that the aperture 3 may be opened without the plane 4 extending beyond the plane 2. When a series of planes is employed, the secondary planes 4 may be connected with a single hand-lever or the like for simultaneous adjustment, the movement of some being the reverse to that of others. A rudder may be connected to the plane 4 by wires &c. so as to be actuated simultaneously therewith for steering and balancing.
