Abstract

20,998. Mayo, C. R. Oct. 5. Roller bearings; lubricating.-An axle-box for railway vehicles is provided with roller bearings, and the ordinary brass is recessed to receive the rollers, or is fitted with a recessed adapter, the brass or the adapter having a rounded edge or edges engaging the journal to take end-thrusts. The rollers a, Fig. 1, are linked together to form an endless chain and dip into oil in the lower part of the axle-box e. The brass c is recessed at d and rounded at the ends. Guard plates may be fixed to the sides of the axle-box to prevent undue swinging of the rollers. The rollers may be mounted in a cylindrical sleeve o, Fig. 11, which is either adapted to the brass as shown or inserted in a recess in the brass. The rollers are either free or journaled in the end flanges of the retaining-sleeve. Should the rollers cease to operate, the sleeve o is free to turn with the journal j. Oil may be supplied to the rollers by a disk p bolted or screwed to the end of the journal j. The disk may be provided with vanes or grooves r for deflecting the lubricant on to the rollers. The sleeve o may be provided with an oil-raising flange.
