Abstract

17,341. Lock, W. H., and Wood, F. W. Aug. 18. Embossing and stamping ; printing from engraved plates.- Presses for printing, of the type described in Specifications No. 16,704, A.D. 1893, No. 14,664, A.D. 1894, No. 14,994, A.D. 1899, and No. 13,660, A D. 1900, are constructed so as to be under more efficient control of the operator while stationed at the front of the press. The inking-apparatus, which is similar to that described in Specification No. 13,660, A.D. 1900, is arranged to be depressed, when required, by means of a footlever 1, Fig. 1, connected by a link 5 to a forked lever which compresses the adjustable rod carrying the ink-fountain and rollers. The inking-apparatus may be locked in the depressed position, and when the die is then moved to the rear of the press it is not inked, and so can be inspected without a preliminary cleaning. The wiping- paper 19 is arranged so that it can be fed onward when the press is not at work, and for this purpose the cam-actuated rod 24, which actuates by ratchet gear the feed and takeup rolls of the paper 19, may be operated to feed the paper 19 by a spring-controlled foot lever 28, which may be moved to engage a stud 30 on the rod 24, or is provided with a pawl which may be made to engage a tooth or recess on the rod. During this movement of the wiping-paper, it is scraped in the usual way. A stop 31 limits the upward movement of the lever 28. If a sheet is not fed into position, or if it is desired to stop the descent of the plunger quickly for any other reason, a spring- controlled pawl 33, Figs. 1 and 5, pivoted to a bracket 35, is adapted to be brought into the path of a rack 50 on the fly - wheel of the plunger - actuating means which is also fitted with pawls as described in Specification No. 14,994, A.D. 1899, for preventing the rebound of the plunger. The pawl 33 is held in the active and inactive positions by a spring 37 connected to a lever 39 ; this lever is mounted on the pivot of the pawl 33 and is connected to a slotted bell-crank 41 connected to a lever 44, which is normally in the dotted position in Fig. 5, and the pawl 33 is free of the rack 50. When it is desired to stop the descent of the plunger, the lever 44 is lowered and the pawl 33 engages the rack 50 and stops further descent of the plunger. Means, such as a notched sector 47, may be used for holding the lever 44 in its two terminal positions.
