To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1", EDMUND OCUMPAUGH, 2d, a citizen of the United States,and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful'lmprovements in Printing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing-machines of the type in which any of a series of characters or words may be impressed selectively upon a check orother article. The invention, while having features applicable to various machines of this type, is particularly applicable to machines of the kind commonly designated as check-writing machines, in which characters are provided for filling in the amounts of bank-checks.
One object of the invention is to improve the manually-operable mechanism by which both the selectlve and the impressing opera-.
tions of the printingmeans are controlled, particularly to produce an arrangement in which twoeasily performed movements of'a pair of manually-operable members serve for the accomplishment of both of these inventions.
To the foregoing end the invention comprises the use of mechanism in which two manually-operable members, adapted to be grasped simultaneously by one hand, are arranged to have a rocking movement for the selective operation, and to be compressed together to produce the impressing operation.
Another object of the invention is to improve the means by, which the check, or other article to be printed, is held in position between the printing instrumentalities, and to this end I employ an arrangement in which two rollers or other instrumentalities engage and hold the work at opposite sides of the printing-means, and in which a single yoke-shaped member supports bothof so that they may be:

In the illustrated embodiment of the in vention theprinting instrumentalities comprise a type-wheel 5 and a platen 6. The type-wheel carries a series of types arranged toform vwords expressive of various numbers, and it is journaled' in horizontal position so that the. characters may be broughtselectively into workingposition by rotationoi the wheel. The platen 6 and the types are preferably, serrated soas to have a cutting'action on the paper of a check.
The manually-operable means for controlling the action of the printing-means comprise two members'? and 8, which are so positioned that they maybe grasped simultaneously by one hand of the user. The member 7 is an arm projecting integrally from a sleeve 9'which isgjournaled horizontally in: the casing 10 of the machine. Also integral with the sleeve 9 is a segmental plate 11, having; gear-teeth on its periphery which mesh with a pinion 12 fixed to the Accordingly, the type-wheel may be rotatedby swingingthe arm 7 forwardly or rearwardly, thus producing the selective operation of .the printing-means. To indicate theposition in which the typewheelstands a pointer 13 is fixed to the plate 11, and it-works through a slot in the casing, and' cooperates with a graduated scale 14:, as shown in Fig. 1. To further assist the selective operation, the plate 11 is provided with a series of depressions 16,'whichare engaged by. a springpressed'detent 15. This detent'. does not prevent movement of the plate, but it tends to cause the plate to come to rest in the several positions corresponding to the selective positions: ofrthe type-wheel, in which one oranother of the lines of type is directly above the platen 6.

The second ma-nually-operable member 8 at 17 on the arm 7 The inner end of this lever engages a plunger 18, which slides loosely the center of the sleeve 9 and ena bell-crank lever 19, which is journaled on a fixed pivot in the casing and enters the sleeve 9 through a lateral opening therein, as shown in Fig. 3. In order that the'work may be heldfirmly in position'upon the work-table 25 during the impressing operation, I employ means comprising two rollers 27 and 28, which are journaled in opposite sides of a yoke-shaped member 29. This member is mounted on pivots 30 at its ends, so that it bridges the forwardly-projecting part of the casing in which the type-wheel is mounted, and two 7 sprlngs 31, engaging the yoke at its ends, tend to swing it downwardly so as to force the rollers into engagement with the. work.
Cooperating with the rollers 27 and 28 are two rollers 32 and 33, which are located beneath the work-table. The roller 32 is journaled in fixed position, and it and the roller 27 are preferably provided with cooperating slots and flanges to hold the work 7 more securely against lateral movement. The roller 33 is a feed-roller, being serrated,
as shown in Fig. 2, to increase its hold upon the work. This roller is actuated, by any ordinary or suitable mechanism, to feed the work intermittently after each impressing operation.
It will be apparent that the machine just described is capable of convenient and rapid operation in theprinting of checks, or the performance of similar work. operation .is easily performed by the rocking movement of the members 7 and 8, and is then immediately followed by the impressing movement without removing the hand from these members, and owing to the use of the hand-grip for this latterpurpose a considerable pressure may be transmitted The selective to the platen without inconvenient effort on the part of the user.
My invention is not limited to theembodiment thereof hereinbefore described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but it may be embodied in various other forms within the nature of the invention as it is defined in the following claims.
