Abstract

16,946. Ribau, U., and Mandics, E. von. Aug. 12. Windows. - Relates to window sashes which lie in the same plane when closed. The window is provided with double sashes the stiles and rails of which are rabbeted to engage corresponding rabbets on the frame, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, thereby forming a tight closure. Each sash has a lower projecting member 14, carrying a pivot 30, and an upper sliding bolt, which work in a groove 12, in the upper part of the frame and in a movable metal channel 16 in the lower half. The channel 16 is pivoted at 20 to the frame, its upper end being turned over the top edge of a plate 22, on the back of which are pivoted two spring camplates 23, 23<a> having notches to engage the turned-over edge 21 of the channel. The channel 16 may be turned about its pivot 20 until it is in line with the groove 1, so that the lower sash may be slid into the upper portion of the frame ; the sash is prevented from falling by a pivoted spring plate 27, which is forced back when the channel 16 is in line with the groove 1. The double sashes are connected together, as shown in Fig. 15, by a plate 32 which is formed with a slot 38 with an inclined edge, is pivoted to a plate 36 on the inner sash, and is pressed up by a spring 37, so that the inclined edge of the slotted plate 32 snaps over the head of a pin 39 on the outer sash and holds the sashes together. Inclined plates 2, 3 are fitted to the head of the frame and to the top rail of the sash, so that the sashes, when raised, are pressed tightly against the frame. The sash-cord connexion comprises a C or S hook, one end of which receives the knotted end of the cord while the other end engages the head of the pivot or the top of the weight. To prevent the sashes from falling in case of breakage of the cords, the guide grooves are provided with slots 31 into which the pointed heads of the pivots 30 slip when the sash tilts. The lower sash is prevented from being drawn up by the weight, when turned in, by a projection 29 on the pivot, which bears against the lower end of the channel 16.
