Ironing-machines.-In a shirt-ironing machine, the iron 14 is oscillated about a vertical axis so as to iron the shirt front and the neck-band in their normal relative positions. The spindle 12, oscillated by mechanism within the standard 1, carries a radial pin 13 adapted to enter a longitudinal recess in the iron, which is drawn towards the spindle by a pair of springs 15, but may be displaced outwardly by actuating a bell-crank lever 16 pivoted on the iron. This lever carries a roller 166 which is pressed against the standard 1 when it is desired to move the iron outwards. The shirt is placed on one of two boards 17, which are mounted on carriages 33 running along rails 26 and can be raised into contact with the iron by means of a plate 29 supported by a lever 50 connected with the treadle-lever 54 by a resilient telescopic link 53. The treadle-lever can be held in any desired position by means of a pawl 62, which engages a toothed quadrant 63 and is operated by a foot-lever 60. The iron is recessed to fit over the block 73 against which the neck-band is placed, and the band is thus ironed while in a vertical position. To permit the escape of moisture, the sole of the iron has grooves or ribs radiating from the axis of oscillation. The spindle 12 may be disconnected from its driving-gear by means of a spring clutch pin 81. The machine may be duplicated, two irons and sets of tables being arranged on opposite sides of a common standard.
